iPhone stand & speaker
CJ Monster Mouth is a handmade, wooden portable stand and sound amplifier.
Designed to improve the sound flow and direction, while improving the frequencies response.
iPhone speaker suffers from harmonic distortions when the volume is high.
The main goal was to improve the sound quality, instead of only amplifying the volume. While creating a portable product that works as an iPhone stand.
Designing the horn shape
To improve the sound quality, an exponential horn was necessary. Also, to create a portable stand, the horn has to have a rectangle shape.
Exponential horns are controlling efficient the mid and high range of frequencies. Amplifying these ranges without adding much sound color.
Rectangle horns are increasing the horizontal dispersion, causing to lobe distortion. To reduce the lobe distortion, the side “inner cheeks” added in the shape of the horn.
The inner cheeks are also helping to normalize the high & mid‐range frequencies.
The particular horn shape —including the “teeth” shapes— results to a better balance on mid/high‐range of frequencies.
The limited bass of iPhone speaker, is slightly affected and normalized; Resulting to a better balance between low and mid/high‐range.
Material
The wood that I choosed was, zebrawood (Microberlinia brazzavillensis) for the top and bottom sections, and teak (Tectona grandis) for the middle section, including the “teeth”.
Cable management
On the back side, a hole is accommodating the Lightning charging cable.
